How Can I Find Quality Behavioral Health Services for Children/Youth?
They are out there, but quality varies greatly from practioner to practioner. Pennsylvania is the only state in the nation where every child who needs mental health services is eligible for publicly funded services. In fact, that is part of the problem. There are not enough practitioners
trained in effective evidence based behavioral health methods to meet Pennsylvania’s needs.
Here are some tips to find quality care.
- Find out what local providers are trained in and use Evidence Based Practices (EBD). The Matrix of Children’s Evidence-Based Interventions is a comprehensive list of EBDs by diagnosis.
- Prepare Be a good consumer. The Family Guide to Systems of Care for Children with Mental Health Needs gives information to families on choosing and partnering in the care of their
child. Ask providers directly about their training and practice , but also ask local family
advocates, County CASSP and children’s mental health coordinators, your insurer. (Medicaid)
