Radio Smart Talk Covers PA Juvenile Justice Responsibilities to Children, Victims, and Community

On May 17, Radio Smart Talk, a live radio program out of Harrisburg, PA focused on juvenile justice. The show featured Cumberland County Court of Common Pleas Judge Kevin Hess, who tries juveniles, and Cumberland County Deputy Public Defender Ron Turo, who defends them.

The guests discussed their county court process, and how it supports Balanced and Restorative Justice, the basic principle of the PA Juvenile Justice system. They compared this ideal to what happened in the Luzerne County scandal and what the Juvenile Justice system is putting into place to protect children from such abuse in the future. They also identified the great need for early and effective mental health and drug and alcohol treatment for children. This was a helpful and interesting introduction to the ideas that govern the PA Juvenile Justice system and discussion of how treatment and rehabilitation form the core of the courts response to children in conflict with the law.

Listen to the show and hear what they have to say.
